Single Crystal CaS:Eu and SrS:Eu Luminescent Particles Obtained by Solvothermal Synthesis

Abstract: Single crystal CaS:Eu and SrS:Eu luminescent particles were synthesized via a solvothermal route at relatively low temperature ͑200°C͒. The as-obtained suspensions were strongly photoluminescent ͑PL͒, pointing at good Eu incorporation. The phosphors showed a broad PL emission band with an emission peak at 663 and 623 nm for CaS:Eu and SrS:Eu, respectively. The synthesis method meets the growing interest in small monodisperse particles. The composition and morphology of the particles was evaluated with transmis… Show more

“…That is, for the single-cation sulphides SrS:Eu 2 þ and CaS:Eu 2 þ , splitting energies of 1.49 and 1.86 eV, respectively, have been reported 33 . While the green excitation band (400-590 nm) can readily be assigned to the 4f 7 -4f 6 5d 1 :T 2g transition of Eu 2 þ , the ultraviolet-blue band can be assigned to excitation to the 4f 6 5d 1 :E g level 30 . If it is superimposed by matrix absorption as described above, due to the corresponding emission energies, energy transfer from the anion defect levels of Sr 0.40 Ca 0.59 Eu 0.01 S to 4f 6 5d 1 :T 2g in the Eu 2 þ centres can be expected.…”

“…The SrS:Eu|SrS:Ce core|shell particles were prepared solvothermally [13] with ethylenediamine (C 2 H 8 N 2 ) (99% Alfa Aesar) as a solvent. This method yields micron-sized single crystalline cuboids, mainly cubes.…”

“…In the calculations only orbits whose starting position is close ( ≈ 5 nm) to the position of the path after maximum 1000 bounces are taken into account, otherwise the trajectories tend to meet the corners of the cavity. These corners are typically rounded [13] or the squares are corner-cut [2,12] in any practical situation; in these cases the angle of incidence at the corners does not fulfill the condition n sin θ > 1 and the light will no longer be confined by TIR. After the calculations of the resonant wavelengths, these values are binned per 1 nm in a histogram.…”
