Single Crystal Li1+x[Ni0.6Mn0.4]1−xO2 Made by All-Dry Synthesis

Abstract: Cobalt-free, single crystal layered-oxide positive electrode materials like Li1+x[Ni0.6Mn0.4]1-xO2 (NM64) received recent interest because of their low cost, high-voltage stability, and good cycle life. In this work, single crystal NM64 is successfully produced with a simple all-dry synthesis process that requires no water, no intermediate chemicals, and produces little waste. The all-dry synthesized NM64 has ≤ 4% nickel in the lithium layer based on Rietveld refinement of powder X-ray diffraction patterns, ha… Show more

“…This synthesis technique typically utilizes hydroxide precursors (HPs), and the molten salt is used to enhance crystal growth at lower temperatures. In fact, molten salt techniques require additional steps including washing the products with water which leads to a higher water consumption. Accordingly, all-dry NMC synthesis techniques have drawn interest recently in order to reduce cathode synthesis cost and reduce waste substantially. ,, …”

“…11 Building upon this method, Tahmasebi et al synthesized NMC622 from a single-phase crystalline rock-salt (RS) NMC622 precursor without ball-milling, eliminating ferrous contaminants. 12 Recent attempts at Co-free Ni-rich CAMS have also been reported, with Garayt et al synthesizing Li 1+x (Ni 0.6 Mn 0.4 ) 1-x O 2 , 13 while Zhang et al produced Li 1+x (Ni 0.7 Mn 0.3 ) 1−x O 2 using a similar method. 14 With industrial all-dry SC NMC production becoming increasingly viable, optimizing these materials compositionally is necessary to enhance performance.…”
