Single-Crystalline Octahedral Au–Ag Nanoframes

Abstract: We report the formation of single-crystalline octahedral Au-Ag nanoframes by a modified galvanic replacement reaction. Upon sequential addition of AgNO(3), CuCl, and HAuCl(4) to octadecylamine solution, truncated polyhedral silver nanoparticles formed first and then changed into octahedral Au-Ag nanoframes, without requiring a conventional Ag removal step with additional oxidation etchant. The nanoframes have 12 sides, and all of the eight {111} faces are empty. The side grows along the [110] direction, and th… Show more

“…Similarly, Ag nanowires have been widely exploited as templates for the preparation of hollow nanotubes via the GRR [86,97,[100][101][102][103][104]. Other structures commonly obtained through the GRR between HAuCl 4 and the corresponding Ag template include nanorings [105,106], nanoframes [107][108][109], and nanorattles [110][111][112][113][114]. A set of hollow AuAg nanostructures are shown in Figure 3.…”

“…However, the details still need to be further explored because similar PtCu 3 can be generated in quite different conditions (Figure 9a) 142. Ag‐Au octahedra NFs could be achieved in a two‐step process 143. Ag nanosphere is prepared at the beginning of the reaction, then galvanic etching by AuCl 4 − could change the morphologies and compositions, and finally Ag‐Au NFs are produced (Figure 9c).…”

“…The template being oxidized, possessing the lower reduction potential and higher rate of diffusion, loses electrons and the metal being reduced gains electrons. Oxidation is initiated on the crystal lattice plane of the sacrificial template exhibiting the highest surface energy [84,[100][101][102]. Small pinholes, or Kirkendall voids, are formed as a result of this oxidation [103,104].…”
