Single‐port endoscopic thyroidectomy via a submental approach: Report of an initial experience

Abstract: Our initial experience demonstrates that the TSSPET is feasible and safe for selected patients. Nevertheless, large series and comparative studies could be necessary to further confirm its effectiveness.

“…The surgical methods of radical surgery of thyroid cancer contained the traditional open surgery with Kocher's incision and the cosmetic surgery. Cosmetic surgery for thyroid tumor surgeries include ultrasound-guided ablation ( 8 ), minimally invasive video-assisted thyroidectomy ( 9 , 10 ), endoscopic surgery with incision far from the neck ( 11 13 ) and endoscopic surgery via natural orifices ( 12 , 13 ). In terms of cosmetics and minimally invasive effects, ultrasound-guided ablation has the most ideal qualities.…”

“…In 1997, Hüscher et al first performed endoscopic thyroidectomy (ET) 5. Since then, various ET approaches have evolved, such as breast,6 axillary,7 axillobreast,8 submental9 and oral cavity approaches 10. However, endoscopic techniques present some difficulties in obtaining adequate surgical views because of the small working space and two-dimensional operative views 11.…”

“…Trans‐submental single‐port endoscopic thyroidectomy (TSSPET) was studied in a porcine model. The major advantages are the avoidance of both extensive dissection in extracervical area and a conspicuous scar in the natural neck position . However, there was no human study for this approach.…”
