Single-step in situ synthesis of MoO2-faceted structures as highly efficient HER electrocatalysts and electrode materials for pseudocapacitors

Abstract: The in situ developed intermediate MoO2-layered structures exhibited superior performance towards HER activity. The faceted and stacked MoO2 structures are potential candidates as electrode materials for pseudocapacitors.

“…Under the alkaline medium, three possible reaction mechanism was involved in the HER process. The reactions are in the following, Volmer reaction (discharge step), Heyrovsky reaction (electrochemical hydrogen desorption), and Tafel reaction (chemical desorption) respectively . The result may indicate that the rate-determining step of prepared electrocatalysts was combination of Volmer reactions.…”

“…8 As a result, finding effective, inexpensive, and stable catalysts to meet the ever-increasing hydrogen demand is critical. In order to develop an alternative for the noble metal electrocatalysts, researchers have conducted extensive studies on non-noble metal compounds such as phosphides, [9][10][11][12] sulphides, [13][14][15][16] oxides [17][18][19][20] and nitrides. [21][22][23] Because of its remarkable catalytic efficiency and minimal cost, transition metal nickel (Ni) has drawn considerable attention for energy conversion reactions.…”

“…The combustion of fossil fuels leads to an increased CO 2 emission on one hand and the reserves for such fossil fuels are being depleted on the other hand. 1,2 As a consequence, the emissions result in an adverse effect on the environmental ecosystem, which forces us to move towards the use of clean and green renewable energy resources such as solar, wind, and tidal. 3 As renewable energy sources are highly intermittent, it is essential to develop efficient energy storage devices.…”
