The increase in the number of never‐married and not‐cohabiting singles, or “effective singles,” was first observed in Japan and Southern Europe. In Northern and Western Europe and North America, increased singlehood was due largely to increased cohabitation. Existing sociological theories of singlehood, however, are formulated based on the observations of the latter, and fall short in explaining why more individuals remain unpartnered. The wealth of data from singlehood research in Japan suggest that many singles desire marriage yet drift into singlehood, facing structural, cultural barriers in a rapidly changing social context. The impact of gender inequality is salient, but existing theories focus on women's advancement and egalitarianism. This paper proposes an alternative theoretical framework for explaining causes of singlehood, incorporating sociological and feminist perspectives and Emile Durkheim's theory of anomie, and calls for shifting the center to observations from non‐Western societies for better theorization.

Jumlah lajang di Indonesia mengalami tren peningkatan dari tahun ke tahun. Tulisan ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis dampak yang ditimbulkan terkait lajang baik dari sudut pandang sosial, budaya, maupun psikologis. Analisis dilakukan secara kualitatif terhadap data statistik kependudukan serta artikel ilmiah terkait lajang di Indonesia yang kemudian hasilnya disajikan dalam bentuk narasi. Lajang di Indonesia mendapatkan berbagai pandangan dari masyarakat baik positif maupun negatif. Seorang lajang dianggap lebih bebas, modern, mandiri, dan berfokus pada karir. Secara negatif lajang juga dianggap kesepian, tidak menarik, dan kurang pandai bersosialisasi. Pandangan negatif serta kurangnya penerimaan membuat lajang merasa tertekan. Secara jangka panjang peningkatan jumlah lajang juga dapat memicu permasalahan baru. Meningkatnya jumlah lajang berpotensi menurunkan angka kelahiran yang kemudian mengakibatkan rendahnya presentase penduduk usia produktif di masa mendatang.

Concerns of gender equality and fluidity has been a long‐standing issue in contemporary society for decades, however, recently, the pressing issue surrounding media representations of gender has come to the forefront. The rise of feminist studies over the last few decades has led to a cornucopia of research on manga and anime in relation to femininity, but fewer examine masculinity or gender fluidity. This paper will expand the study of both femininity and masculinity but will mainly focus on masculinity, in the form of the Carnivore Woman and the Herbivore Man, with an argument towards the “Omnivorous Person.” The omnivorous person can be thought of as an extension and paralleling to gender fluidity. As a highly accessible medium, through fantasy and metaphor, anime and manga have the ability to display a collective consciousness of Japanese society. To further elaborate on these new gender trends within Japanese popular media, a textual analysis of the anime film Kimi no Na wa (2016) will be used as exemplar. It is impossible to conduct any in‐depth study that is truly representative of a genre, especially considering the magnitude and vastness of manga and anime, however, selecting a text that is “popular” can suppose some degree of cultural relevance.
