Síntesis geocronológica del magmatismo, metamorfismo y metalogenia de Costa Rica, América Central

Abstract: A comprehensive compilation of 651 (since 1968) radiometric ages determinations (415 40 Ar/ 39 Ar, 211 K/Ar, 5 U/Th, 4 Rb/Sr, 2 U/Pb, and 13 fission track thermochronology ages using zircon) provides a complete picture of the igneous stratigraphy of Costa Rica, and information about the age of the major metamorphic and metalogenic events in the region. Igneous rocks of Late Jurassic to Middle Eocene age (~ 160 to ~ 41 Ma), mainly accreted ophiolites. At the beginning of Campanian time (~ 71 Ma), the actual sub… Show more

“…This andesitic stratovolcano pertains to the Miravalles-Zapote complex, whose activity started with the edification of the Guayabo volcano (1.17-1.0 Ma; Alvarado and Gans, 2012). The latter was destroyed by the following explosive activity (1.5 and 0.6 Ma) giving rise to the formation of the 15 km wide Guayabo caldera .…”

“…The latter was destroyed by the following explosive activity (1.5 and 0.6 Ma) giving rise to the formation of the 15 km wide Guayabo caldera . The latter hosts Cabro Muco volcano (0.57-0.28 Ma), in the eastern sector, and Zapote and Miravalles volcanoes (<0.28 Ma) in the northern sector Alvarado and Gans, 2012). Tephrochronology data suggested that an important eruptive event occurred at about 5050 BC, whilst local witnesses reported a volcanic event on the 14th of September 1946 in the SW flank of Miravalles.…”

“…La estructura del Puente de Piedra es de origen volcánico y se encuentra dentro del edificio del estratovolcán complejo Poás, de edad < 1 Ma (Ruiz et al, 2010, Alvarado y Gans 2012. Comparativamente a nivel mundial con otros arcos naturales que tienen funcionabilidad en su parte superior (Cuadro 1), la edad de sus materiales es relativamente joven y es de tamaño pequeño.…”

“…Such units were later classified as formations and were named Colima, Tiribí and Barva (SENARA-BGS, 1985). This volcanic activity has been explained as effusive fissure eruptions (Protti, 1986;Kussmaul, 1988in Alvarado & Gans, 2012, although some of them could be explained as volcanism from the medium to distal part of the Paleo-Volcanic Chain (Alvarado & Gans, 2012) and the Barva volcano whose activity began after the volcanic activity that generated the Aguacate Group.…”
