Sinus Tympani Endoscopic Anatomy

Abstract: The study emphasizes the importance of removal of this lateral lip of bone to expose the orifice of the sinus tympani. This should be complemented with the use of a 30 degrees endoscope (1.7 mm in canal-up and 4.0 mm in canal-down technique) for better visualization and cleaning of this hidden area.

“…In the last three decades, endoscope has been increasingly used in endonasal surgery that nowadays is simple and common [1]. Since the last decade, endoscope was used in otology firstly as a diagnostic tool then during middle ear surgery [2][3][4][5][6][7]. Endoscopy provided an important and sometimes unexpected detailed middle ear anatomy particularly for the hidden recesses such as the sinus tympani (ST) and the supratubal recess (STR).…”

“…Baki et al [4] studied the endoscopic anatomy of the sinus tympani on 30 cadaveric temporal bones. They found that the sinus tympani is bounded laterally by a constant ledge of bone anterior to the facial nerve.…”

“…Since the last decade endoscope was used in otology just as a diagnostic tool and never over the eardrum. Recent development of endoscopy in middle ear surgery [4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11] has permitted an extremely and unexpected detailed view of the ''in vivo'' anatomy of middle ear. Exploration of hidden recesses like the sinus tympani, the anterior epitympanic space, and the protympanic space with such a magnification is almost impossible with microscopic traditional approaches.…”
