“…Recent schemas define it as a subset of [12,13] or as an entity distinct from [3,6,14 -16] pulmonary blastoma. Defining pulmonary blastoma as a lung tumor that mimics developing lung [5], the term "pulmonary blastoma" may encompass the following: (1) classic biphasic blastoma, composed of malignant glands and malignant stroma [5,17]; (2) well-differentiated fetal adenocarcinoma, comprised only [18,19] or predominantly [17] of malignant epithelium; and (3) PPB, consisting of malignant stroma with or without accompanying benign epithelium [3,5].…”

“…On the other hand, we evaluated glycogen levels in the cancerous and noncancerous tissues of human lung by measuring the areas of glycogen band at 1045 cm Ϫ1 due to the OH stretching coupled with bending (1) and reported that the glycogen levels in the cancerous tissues are significantly higher than those in the noncancerous tissues (9). Furthermore, it has been suggested that the amount of cholesterol in malignant tissues is lower than that in the normal tissue (22)(23)(24)(25). Thus the decreased methylene band at 1467 cm Ϫ1 observed in the cancerous section might reflect decrease in the cholesterol levels (13,14) due to the degree of malignancy.…”

“…53 Interestingly, occult neuroendocrine differentiation is a rather common finding in the epithelial component of PB, with potential histochemical argyrophilia and immunoreactivity for endocrine markers. 71,72 A significant overlap exists between classic PB and the tumor described as pulmonary endodermal tumor resembling fetal lung or well-differentiated adenocarcinoma simulating fetal lung (Fig 11), which differs only in its relative lack of a malignant stromal component and more frequent synthesis of a particular oncofetal determinant, alpha-fetoprotein. 30,69,[71][72][73][74] Therefore, the latter lesion probably merely represents a peculiar polar extreme of the same spectrum of neoplasms in which PB resides; namely, that of sarcomatoid carcinomas in general.…”
