Six-Year Incidence of and Risk Factors for Cataract Surgery in a Multi-ethnic Asian Population

Abstract: One in 10 Malay, Indian, and Chinese Singaporeans 40 years of age or older underwent cataract surgery in at least 1 eye over 6 years. In Asian populations, diabetes and myopia, 2 well-known factors associated with cataract prevalence, are significant and potentially modifiable factors associated with the need for cataract surgery.

“…This association was also present in our analysis: persons suffering from diabetes showed a 1.4-fold higher frequency of cataract surgery independently from aging. Our risk estimates for undergoing cataract surgery were slightly lower than those from a previous multi-ethnic Asian population from Singapore [39], which might be due to differences in diabetic treatment regime and in blood sugar control between the two countries. Cataract surgery in only one eye within 5 years a b Fig.…”

“…Accordingly, the effect of DR on the occurrence of sight-threatening cataract is relative accuracy compared to previous studies which enrolled patients with baseline cataract. [32] About the follow up period, the mean disease interval of DM in the current study was about 10 years, which was above the average compared to the previous studies. [23] Thus, the significant correlation between DR and sight-threatening cataract in the current study may with lesser bias.…”

“…The MG atrophy increases with age, and the incidence of cataract surgery is also strongly age related. 14 However, few reports are available describing the MG health of this population. 10 , 11 Furthermore, the prevalence of dry eye and MGD in China is obviously higher than that of European countries.…”
