Agroclimatic conditions and agricultural research and development (R&D) including plant breeding activities by the public sector are some of the most significant exogenous factors in the agricultural sector. However, the effects of the interactions between these two sets of factors on agricultural productivity have not been studied widely in developing countries, despite potentially important implications on their plant breeding strategies. Using three-wave panel data of agricultural households in Nigeria and spatial data on various agroclimatic parameters, we show that agricultural productivity and technical efficiency at the agricultural household level is significantly positively affected by the similarity of agroclimatic conditions between locations where agricultural households are located, and locations where major plant breeding institutes are located. These results hold after controlling for various socioeconomic characteristics of these households, including their physical distances to the breeding institutes. Findings are robust across parametric and nonparametric specifications such as Data Envelopment Method, and after addressing potential endogeneity of agroclimatic similarity and agricultural inputs variables in the production function. Productivity effects due to the locations of plant breeding institutes and resulting agroclimatic similarity can be potentially sizable given Nigeria's past productivity growth speed.JEL classifications: O13, Q12, Q16, Q18

Well-defined and secure property rights over land have long been recognized as essential for economic development (Demsetz 1967;North and Thomas 1973;De Soto 2000). There are, however, different ways in which these rights can be established. Contrary to the norm in developed countries where rights are established by land titles, in many developing countries they are established by contingent use of the land. In this case, security of access requires evidence of productive use by the occupant himself, with the implication that leaving the land idle or letting it to others creates a substantial risk of loss of rights. This can be inefficient for two reasons. First, it imposes conditions on the amount of labor used on the land by requiring that it be kept in production at an accepted standard of use, ignoring the return to labor in alternative activities. Second, the common prohibition to land transactions prevents land from being reallocated from less productive to more productive users. With a focus on increasing the efficiency of land use, land certification and titling programs that remove constraints on land use and allow land transactions have been widely sponsored by national governments and international development agencies (Heath 1990).

Abstract-Indonesia is a multiethnic country with more than 1000 ethnics and sub-ethnics. This ethnicity phenomenon played an important part on internal population mobility. Moreover, transmigration, a type of Indonesian internal mobility, is believed as a cultural project and interpreted as "Javanization" processes carried out by migrants from Central and East Java to the other islands in Indonesia. This paper aims to qualitatively describe social identity and ethnicity phenomena and their relation to internal mobility in Indonesia. In general, this study showed that Indonesian migration pattern is stable with increasing trend. Regional autonomy is a reason for this phenomenon, which opened big opportunity for jobs and investments. However, rural urban gap is still a major problem. Therefore, shifting growth centers to rural areas to foster rural industrialization and "agropolitan" are needed. Similarly, as a national development program, transmigration should develop better social life to pursue national unity and ready to anticipate social identity and ethnicity potential problems in the society. Finally, Expectation to have a better life in a new place and high social bond among Javanese, for sure, have changed social space identity in transmigration location to be a new social space which is more heterogeneous.
