Skin depigmentation activity of Crocus sativus extract cream

Abstract: Purpose: To determine the antioxidant activity of Crucus sativus extract and its effect on human skin using a non-invasive probe mexameter. Methods: The antioxidant activity of C. sativus extract was determined using DPPH method. Water in oil (w/o) topical cream of C. sativus extract (3 %) was formulated and compared with the base (cream without extract). Both creams (formulation and base) were applied to the cheeks of 10 healthy human volunteers for a period of 8 weeks. Melanin and erythema values of skin wer… Show more

“…Then, the oily phase was poured into aqueous phase drop by drop with continuous stirring at 2000 rpm by the mechanical stirrer for 15 min until complete oily phase was added. The speed of mechanical stirrer was then adjusted to 1000 rpm for 5 minutes and further decreased to 500 rpm for next 5 minutes 11 . Base and test formulations were prepared in the same way; the only difference was addition of Albizia lebbeck bark extract in test formulation.…”

“…1,5,8 Crocin showed high radical scavenging activity (50% in 500 ppm methanol solution and 65% and 1000 ppm methanol solution) followed by safranal which was 34% in 500 ppm methanol solution. 2,6 Fagot et al who conducted regarding the evaluation of antioxidant activity in saffron, found that crocin has very strong antioxidant activity compared to vitamin E and vitamin C. 8,17,18 Deng et al research on in vitro human fibroblasts used crocin to assess crocin activity in preventing photoaging where crocin was shown to reduce intracellular ROS levels by neutralizing ROS formed through its dose-dependent inhibitory activity, increasing cell cycle repair, and cell proliferation, increased extracellular matrix activity, and preventing apoptosis. 8 Crocin can inhibit UVAinduced cell membrane peroxidation and inhibit the expression of various proinflammatory mediators including IL-8, PGE-2, IL-6, TNF-α, IL-1 α, and Leukotriene B4 (LTB 4).…”
