Skin lesions in broiler chickens measured at the slaughterhouse: relationships between lesions and between their prevalence and rearing factors

Abstract: 1. This slaughterhouse-based study was to evaluate correlations between cutaneous lesions which are linked to animal welfare. The relationships between these lesions and various rearing factors were investigated. 2. The percentage of lesions in each flock was determined by observation at the slaughterhouse. Fifty-five flocks slaughtered between May 2005 and May 2006 in 8 slaughterhouses were investigated. 3. Data relating to farm management and housing factors during the rearing period were collected retrospec… Show more

“…Similarly, scores used to measure pododermatitis in chickens indicated whether it involves inflammation only or ulceration arising from secondary infection (Allain et al, 2009). High scores of pododermatitis were associated with withdrawal reactions of chickens when touched, indicative of pain.…”

“…In this way we were able to discriminate 'no' or 'mild' HB with very little or no impact on bird welfare and severe HB, impacting on bird welfare (Allain et al, 2009). Data collected in 2008 and scored on the five-point scale were translated into the two-point scale, that is, scores 3 and 4 in the data set of 2008 were replaced by a score of 1 in the current study.…”

“…Several studies have shown that FPD can be induced by litter moisture alone (Mayne et al, 2007;Meluzzi et al, 2008;Allain et al, 2009;Nowaczewski et al, 2011). On the other hand, Eichner et al (2007) and Nagaraj et al (2007) have found no significant correlation between litter moisture and the incidence and severity of FPD, which coincides with our results.…”

“…Ammonia in the litter may contribute to further development of FPD (Haslam et al, 2006;Bilgili et al, 2009), although it does not seem to directly cause it (Martins et al, 2013). The bacteria-generated ammonia dissolves at a high moisture level (Mayne et al, 2007;Meluzzi et al, 2008;Allain et al, 2009;Nowaczewski et al, 2011) and forms an alkaline solution that acts as an irritant to the footpads.…”
