Annual records on the abundance of lemmings (Lemmus sibirica and Dicrostonyx torquatus) and the frequency of dens occupied by reproducing arctic fox Alopex lagopus on the Taimyr peninsula, Siberia, are reported for the time period of 1960—2001. A strong correlation was demonstrated between lemming abundance and the frequency of dens occupied by breeding foxes. This finding is supplemented with certain observations of birds on the peninsula, and information on the reproduction biology of lemmings and arctic fox. Since the breeding success of several bird species nesting on the Siberian tundra are much affected by the population interactions of lemmings and arctic fox, base-line data on these mammals are needed for proper evaluation of avian records, including those from southern migration and wintering areas. The time series reported is the longest yet provided on lemming abundance and reproduction of Arctic Fox.

Haemoproteus spp. are dipteran-borne protozoa that infect erythrocytes and reticuloendothelial cells of birds. These parasites are not usually transmitted between birds belonging to different orders. The suborder Lari (order Charadriiformes) comprises c. 170 avian species, the majority of which are aquatic, including gulls, terns, auklets, murres, and skuas, among others. In spite of the diversity of this avian group, there is limited known diversity of haemosporidian parasites, with only four recorded Haemoproteus morphospecies thus far. We examined the blood smears of 21 kelp gulls (Larus dominicanus) captured at a breeding colony in South Africa, as well as Haemoproteus-positive archival blood smears of 15 kelp gulls and one Hartlaub's gull (Larus hartlaubii) sampled while under care at seabird rehabilitation facilities in South Africa. Haemoproteus sp. infection was detected in 19% of wild-caught kelp gulls. All parasites from gulls were morphologically identified as Haemoproteus jenniae, a species previously recorded in Lari birds at the Galapagos Islands (Ecuador), Rocas Atoll (Brazil), and Poland. Gene sequencing uncovered a new cytb lineage, LARDOM01, which was closely related to the previously reported H. jenniae lineage CREFUR01. Additionally, we evaluated a hapantotype blood smear of Haemoproteus skuae, which had been described infecting a brown skua (Catharcta antarctica) in South Africa. We provide a redescription of H. skuae and discuss the morphological characters distinguishing it from H. jenniae. Further research is necessary to improve our knowledge about the host and geographic distribution, health effects, and phylogeny of H. jenniae and H. skuae.

During the Swedish Tundra Ecology Expedition to northern Canada in 1999 the age and colour phase of Pomarine S. pomarinus, Arctic S. parasiticus and Long-tailed S. longicaudus Skuas were recorded along a transect across 72° longitude from Nuuk, Greenland in the east to Banks Island in the west. Pomarine Skua comprised 4% of the 302 recorded skuas, with 77% Long-tailed Skua and 19% Arctic Skua. Measured indices of lemming numbers were low in the whole visited region. A similar study in 1994 along the Russian tundra from the Kola Peninsula in the west to Wrangel Island in the east was made in a peak lemming year. This resulted in a total of 1,587 skuas, with 52% Pomarine, 10% Arctic and 38% Long-tailed. The Arctic Skua occurred in fairly low densities all along both transects, but was absent from the most northerly sites. The much lower proportion of Pomarine compared to Long-tailed Skua in Canada may be explained by a higher proportion of Pomarines leaving the breeding areas early, since this species obviously did not breed at all this year. It is however possible that lemming peaks on the Canadian Islands are generally less pronounced in the lack of Lemmus species. This would mean that breeding conditions for Pomarine Skuas, being totally dependent on lemmings, are generally less favourable. No skuas in second year plumage were observed and a few immatures of the two smaller species were all recorded in Davis Strait, between Greenland and Baffin Island. This indicates that only a smaller proportion of younger non-breeders reach the breeding grounds. Compared to 25% dark Arctic Skuas in Nuuk, Greenland only 3% of the birds observed on the Canadian Islands were dark. The same total dominance of light birds seem to prevail among all solitarily nesting Arctic Skuas in the arctic region.
