Slag; Value Added Steel Industry Byproducts

Abstract: SLAG; VALUE ADDED STEEL INDUSTRY BYPRODUCTS ŻUŻEL; WARTOŚĆ DODANA ODPADU Z PRZEMYSŁU STALOWEGOSlag is a non metallic co-product, produced in the iron (BF) and steelmaking (BOF and EAF) process. Slag has been commonly utilized on a broad scale ever since these processes were first taken into use. Besides economical benefits, environmental requirements will enhance the need for further product development work concerning the properties of slag in the future, in order to observe the principle of sustainable devel… Show more

“…The typical chemical composition of basic oxygen steelmaking slag is shown in Table 1 (Shi, 2004). Slag is a mainly non-metallic by-product that is made up of silicates, alumina silicates, calcium aluminum silicates, and iron oxides (Joulazadeh and Joulazadeh, 2010). During the BOS process a proportion of the molten iron cannot be recovered so elemental iron is often observed in the slag (Yildirim and Prezzi, 2011).…”

“…Around 20 million tons of slag is produced annually in Europe, half of which is produced is BOS slag , meaning that large quantities of industrial by-products are produced each year. One obvious alternative to landfilling such byproducts would be to reutilize the slag in steelmaking or use for secondary applications (Joulazadeh and Joulazadeh, 2010). Records show that as early as 1589 steelmaking slag has been used to make cannon balls in Germany (Joulazadeh and Joulazadeh, 2010), and in the 1950's slag was utilized to stabilize riverbanks as well as railway ballast, artificial stone and acoustic and thermal insulation (Garside, 1956;Motz and Geiseler, 2001).…”

“…The main gradients of the steel slag are Al2O3, Cr2O3, CaO, MgO, SiO2, and TiO2 [6,10]. In addition, it obviously consists of silicates, alumina silicates, calcium, iron oxides and crystalline compounds [11]. During the process of minimizing iron ore by coke in a blast furnace, BF slag is produced.…”

“…Because it has a low price, it is easy to obtain and it contains a lot of elements that benefit plant growth, slag has gradually entered the field of vision. Slag recycling was firstly used in agriculture to help in the remediation of soil acidity, the reduction in industrial waste water organic load or the releasing of potassium and silicate fertilizers [16,17]. In recent years, more and more researchers have realized the value of slags in greenhouse gas reduction and soil carbon fixation [18,19].…”
