Slavic Generative Syntax

Abstract: This article discusses major research areas in Slavic generative syntax. It begins with a short survey of topics, identifying important literature and useful resources. It then examines selected areas in more detail, specifically: (i) multiple wh-movement, (ii) secondary predication and control, (iii) agreement and coordination, and (iv) nominal structure and phases. Finally, several domains of inquiry are singled out for future research. * I am indebted to Catherine Rudin and an anonymous reviewer for helpful… Show more

“…The extreme end of the spectrum, once known as Stein-Leventhal syndrome, encompasses the combination of hyperandrogenism (hirsutism, acne, alopecia and elevated serum testosterone concentrations), severe menstrual disturbance (amenorrhea or oligomenorrhea) and obesity (Stein IF and Leventhal ML 1935) [11] . Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common endocrinal disorders among women, affecting 5-10% of women at their reproductive age (Franks, 1995) [12] . The syndrome was first defined in 1935 by Stein and Leventhal based on the observation of a set of symptoms such as amenorrhea, hirsutism and obesity in women whose ovaries were enlarged and contained multiple follicular cysts.…”

“…This paper examines two types of clitic placement in Slavic: second position (2P) and verb-adjacent cliticization. The placement has been accounted for in a number of ways (see Tomić 1996, Franks 1998, and Bošković 2001 for early crosslinguistic overviews), with various analyses favoring syntactic or phonological motivations for the clitic positions. Following seminal observations made by Stjepanović (1998), and Bošković (2002), it is now standardly assumed that on the syntactic side, 2P clitics are XP elements that target specifiers in the extended verbal projections, whereas verbadjacent clitics adjoin to verbs as heads.…”

“…Typologically, Spanish is a Romance language and Bosnian a Slavic language -more specifically South Slavic (Franks 1995(Franks , 2005(Franks , 2017Lindseth 1997;Godjevac 2000;Progovac 2005, among others). Both languages have a rich morphological verbal agreement system, as the paradigm in table 1 shows.…”
