Sleep Disruption and Objective Sleepiness in Children With β-Thalassemia and Congenital Dyserythropoietic Anemia

Abstract: Children and adolescents with beta-thalassemia or CDA-1 have evidence of impaired sleep function that is partially due to periodic limb movements during sleep and arousals that result in objective diurnal sleepiness.

“…The decreased expression of the glutathione‐requiring PGD synthase in the CSF of the formerly IDA monkeys may be relevant to the reported relationship between poor iron status and sleep disturbance (Simakajornboon et al. 2003; Tarasiuk et al. 2003).…”

“…Prostaglandin D synthase (PGD synthase) is an abundant brain-specific protein and is used as a marker of CSF during fetal development (McArthur et al 2005). The decreased expression of the glutathione-requiring PGD synthase in the CSF of the formerly IDA monkeys may be relevant to the reported relationship between poor iron status and sleep disturbance (Simakajornboon et al 2003;Tarasiuk et al 2003). PGD synthase is a key enzyme for the production of prostaglandin from arachidonic acid.…”

“…OSAS is associated with snoring, chronic mouth breathing, and restlessness during sleep with or without frequent awakening [5]. The sleep disruption may result in excessive daytime sleepiness [6], behavioral problems and learning disorders. However OSAS may also have more serious complications like growth retardation, neurological and cardiovascular disorders.…”

“…Patient with beta-thalassemia often have bone deformities, growth abnormalities and hepatosplenomegaly. Ineffective erythropoiesis causes osteoporosis and extreme expansion of marrow space in the skull, long bones, and facial bones [6,8]. It is most often seen in Southeast Asia but also other parts of the world [8].…”
