Sleep in the Intensive Care Unit Setting

Abstract: Sleep is essential to human life. Sleep patterns are significantly disrupted in patients who are hospitalized, particularly those in the intensive care unit. Sleep deprivation is pervasive in this patient population and impacts health and recovery from illness. Immune system dysfunction, impaired wound healing, and changes in behavior are all observed in patients who are sleep deprived. Various factors including anxiety, fear, and pain are responsible for the sleep deprivation. Noise, light exposure, and frequ… Show more

“…1 The association between the severity of illness and sleep disturbance in patients in the intensive care unit has been evaluated. 2 Sleep disruption was greater in patients who died and in patients who had a higher disease severity score than in patients who survived and had lower scores. In addition, sleep deprivation has a adverse effect on the immune system and is associated with increased morbidity in critically ill patients.…”

“…This study has clinical relevance, as circadian and sleep disruptions can impair recovery in modern intensive care units. [104][105][106][107] Reconsidering how we practice medicine, by maintaining the diurnal environment and patients biological rhythms, provides a promising non-pharmaceutical approach to improve patient outcomes in acute clinical care settings. 108…”
