A 2 × 2 MIMO antenna for metal-housing mobile handset application is proposed in this article. The polarization diversity is used to arrange the two antennas’ setup. The asymmetric U-shaped nonuniform slot antenna provides two different resonant bands are designed to be operated in long term evolution (LTE) covers lower band (698 MHz to 960 MHz) and upper band (1710 MHz to 2700 MHz). The modified type III balun is used for upper-operating band, and the open stub is used for lower-operating band, good impedance bandwidth, and radiated pattern and efficiency are shown. The isolation (S21) between the antennas is more than 20 dB, and the envelope correlation coefficient (ECC) is less than 0.02. A prototype of the proposed antenna chiselling in the metal-housing mobile handset (with 160 mm in length, 10 mm in height, and 70 mm in width) is fabricated and experimentally studied.

Metasurface-Based Dual Polarized MIMO Antenna for 5G Smartphones Using CMA

This paper exhibits a low profile dual-polarized MIMO antenna with high isolation to meet the requirements of 5G smartphones. The integration between a vertically polarized slot and a horizontally polarized slot is investigated and applied for 28 GHz dual-polarized smartphone antenna. The antenna is combined with metasurface (MTS) to achieve high gain and more directivity. In order to design the metasurface, the characteristic mode analysis is used to investigate the performance of MTS at 28 GHz. The proposed antenna achieves high isolation coefficients better than 40 dB and cross polarization lower than-40 dB from simulated and measured results. The isolation between elements is achieved without any additional decoupling techniques. The proposed MTS slot antenna operates with 4 GHz bandwidth (26-30 GHz) with a realized gain of 11 dBi and efficiency of 90%. Four antennas (with eight ports) are positioned orthogonally at the corners of the mobile PCB to serve MIMO for 5G applications. The effect of MIMO antenna on the human is taken into consideration in power density term. Furthermore, the housing and components of smartphones are taken into our consideration in this paper. This article presents the design, fabrication, and testing of a broadband directional slot antenna and its application in a vehicular environment. The proposed antenna consists of a slot antenna fed by a simple microstrip line. Broadband impedance matching is achieved by replacing the conventional microstrip line with a modified microstrip line. The modified microstrip line consists of a microstrip line terminated with an impedance transformer and a square patch. The proposed antenna offers 76.9% bandwidth centered around 4.8 GHz covering most of the communication applications between 3 and 6.75 GHz. Furthermore, the antenna's radiation pattern is shaped to obtain the desired directional characteristics using a simple reflector and array of via holes. The typical gain enhancement is 2.45 dBi at 5 GHz. This gain enhanced slot antenna is further used to construct the four‐element MIMO antenna. The proposed MIMO antenna configuration offers omnidirectional coverage with realized antenna gain greater than 6 dBi making the antenna more suitable for the vehicular environment. The prototype antenna and the MIMO array are fabricated and measurement results are presented. The measurement results are in good agreement with the simulation results.
