Small‐size reconfigurable antenna for WWAN/LTE/GNSS smartphone applications

Abstract: A small‐size reconfigurable smartphone antenna using a PIN diode for WWAN/LTE and global navigation satellite system (GNSS) smartphone application is presented. When the diode is in ‘OFF’ state, a T‐shaped feeding strip and an encircled T‐shaped parasitic shorted strip formed a coupled‐fed antenna, which achieves a low‐wideband covering GSM850/900 bands and a high‐wideband covering GSM1800/1900/UMTS2100/LTE2300/2500 bands. When the diode is in ‘ON’ state, a loop antenna working at 1/2 wavelengths is formed to … Show more

“…By considering all the frequency bands covered by the predefined limit for mobile terminal antennas (|S 11 | -6 dB) [44,45,46,47], the experimental frequency response results demonstrate that antenna exhibits a minimum bandwidth of 380 MHz at its lower band and can operate across the GSM, UMTS, LTE, 5G, WLAN, WiMAX, ISM, and C-band satellite communication bands.…”

“…The design configuration of mobile phone antennas can be grouped into several main types such as loop antennas, reconfigurable antennas, slot antennas, monopole antennas, and metal boundary antenna . Although there are many design methods, it remains difficult to achieve a design with a profile height of less than 10 mm and a coverage of more than eight frequency bands.…”

“…The proposed structure operates in three modes and can cover the GSM850 (824–894 MHz), GSM900 (880–960 MHz), GLONASS1616 (1610–1626.5 MHz), DCS1800 (1710–1880 MHz), PCS1900 (1850–1990 MHz), UMTS2100 (1920–2170 MHz), LTE2300 (2300–2400 MHz), WLAN (2400–2480 MHz), and LTE2500 (2500–2690 MHz) bands. To compare our proposed antenna with antennas reported in refs , which were published in recent years, the operating bands and the sizes of the antennas are summarized in Table . It shows that the proposed antenna covers more frequency bands and has a compact size.…”

“…Although 3-D antennas can be further compressed to be 2-D structures by coupled-feed techniques, 5,6 they still occupy a very large clearance zone. To reduce the size of the antennas and still ensure they can cover a wide operating band, the frequency-reconfigurable technology based on different tuning methods is studied, 7,[9][10][11][12][13][14][15] which has been validated to be one of the most effective ways in minimizing antenna designs. Instead of adding the extra structures, the antennas mainly control the electrical length of the current path by independently adjusting the states of the switches located in the radiating elements in real time.…”
