Small Things Matter: The Value of Rapid Biodiversity Surveys to Understanding Local Bird Diversity Patterns in Southcentral Mindanao, Philippines

Abstract: Rapid assessment biodiversity surveys are usually employed when resources or time is limited. In terrestrial ecosystems, birds are important ecological indicators of ecosystem health. Our study used rapid inventories to show that species differ across habitat types; species richness and rarity were higher in pristine habitats (native and restored areas) while nonprotected habitats (e.g., plantations and orchards) mainly had common and nonendemic species. Our findings demonstrate the importance of collective lo… Show more

“…Tanalgo and colleagues (2019) mentioned that intact native forests are valuable habitats for endemic birds. Endemic birds are also reported to prefer foraging on native trees (Paker et al 2014;Tanalgo et al 2019). Since green spaces surveyed were minimally composed of native plant species at the time of sampling; thus, low endemism was noted.…”

“…For example, the size of the flock positively affected the FID of P. montanus, but had a negative effect on the FID of G. striata. The larger flock formation may explain this in P. montanus compared to G. striata , which often occurs singly or in pairs [ 35 ]. The flock size of animals is positively related to the early warning communication strategy of the individuals in the group, especially with highly social species [ 24 ].…”

“…Our study focused on the escape strategy of two cosmopolitan urban bird species in Southcentral Mindanao, namely, the Eurasian tree sparrow ( P. montanus ) and the Zebra dove ( G. striata ) [ 34 , 35 ]. The Eurasian tree sparrow is a small (14–15 cm in body length) and diurnal urban species, characterized by its black patch with a pure white cheek, chestnut crown, and nape.…”

“…Given more time to do the sampling, more species will be recorded in the Arayat study area. Although the importance of rapid biodiversity surveys should also not be overlooked as they address the lack of baseline biodiversity information (Tanalgo et al, 2019), especially in critical areas such as Arayat and Edera.…”
