Small worlds, inheritance networks and industrial clusters

Abstract: The performance of firms within industrial clusters has been the subject of a multitude of studies. The organizational attributes inherited by spinoffs from parent firms is one explanation behind performance premiums. This paper examines the relationship between a spinoff's network and its geographic location in an industrial cluster. We hypothesize that there is a negative relationship between a spinoff's network efficiency and its distance from the cluster's centroid. Although recent literature infers that t… Show more

“…Secondly, by using relational data on the individual level rather than firm level, I might understand more accurately the motivations behind tie formation. Moreover, the direct measurement of how inherited network ties matter for industry clusters is also a promising area for future research (Bagley 2018). Further insights on the extent to which firms and entrepreneurs build on inherited capabilities, routines and previous experiences would help us understand better why spinoffs form more ties than other companies in clusters.…”

“…Ter Wal (2013) shows, on a comparative basis, that small local spinoffs perform a key role in the establishment of dense collaboration networks in clusters. Furthermore, Bagley (2018) demonstrates that the personal ties of founders to parent companies influence the performance of spinoffs in clusters.…”

“…Nowadays, there is a large number of scientific publications on the cluster organization of the economy (Bagley, 2019;Cusmano, Morrison, & Pandolfo, 2015;Ivanov, Afanas'ev, & Chulanova, 2019;Martin & Coenen, 2015) and others. Institutional context and cluster emergence are considered by Stepanova and Polyakov (2019), Gegechkori, Polyakov, Nikitina, and Chudaeva (2019), aerospace clusters are analyzed in the works of Isupov, Martyshkin, and Prokhorov (2015), Ivanenko and Ivanenko (2015).…”

“…Measuring the network from the perspective of the main component is not a new concept. SeeBagley (2018),Borgatti (2006),Gulati et al (2012), andDavis et al (2003) andUzzi and Spiro (2005) for further reasoning behind this method.…”
