Smart Architectural and Urban Heritage: An Applied Reflection

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to present the use of 3D models and augmented reality (AR) to study and communicate architectural and urban values and, therefore, favor the development of dedicated forms of “smart heritage”. The study rises from a reflection on the concept of “heritage”, as defined in the international documents, intended as an evolving idea that puts together tangible and intangible aspects. Moreover, digital technologies favor “phygital” applications where the digital dimension support the traditio… Show more

“…Articles about the research of urban heritage by smart buildings and reducing energy usage are as follows: "Smart Architectural and Urban Heritage" (Brusaporci, S.; Maiezza, P.), "Integration between photovoltaic systems and cultural heritage" (Elena Lucchi) [35][36][37] and so on. Based on the analysis of the collective memory of the Luoyang old industrial zone as the entry point, guided by the practice of "educing energy and intelligence", the transformation and renewal of the Luoyang bearing factory is positioned as a "dynamic community of symbiotic integration of educing energy and urban development".…”

“…Burkey used the qualitative studies of eight cultural heritage communities and a digital heritage initiative to build a new ecosystem for cultural heritage and corporate memory [26]. "Smart heritage" is developed using 3D models and augmented reality to study and communicate architectural and urban values [27]. Heritage documentation and dissemination activities, such as on-site observations, analysis, and intervention, can be interconnected in a digital environment, enabling multi-time and multi-dimensional management of the available information [28].…”

“…The "smart building" term has several definitions proposed. According to one of the definitions (Al-Omari, 2007;Brusaporci and Maiezza, 2021), a smart building is any structure that uses automated processes to automatically control the building's operations, including heating, ventilation, air conditioning, lighting, security, and other systems. This definition is close to another one (Gunatilaka et al, 2021;Khoshelham, 2018): a smart building is a building, which is equipped with fully automated building service control systems.…”
