Smart, Biomimetic Periosteum Created from the Cerium(III, IV) Oxide-Mineralized Eggshell Membrane

Abstract: The periosteum orchestrates the microenvironment of bone regeneration, including facilitating local neuro-vascularization and regulating immune responses. To mimic the role of natural periosteum for bone repair enhancement, we adopted the principle of biomimetic mineralization to delicately inlay amorphous cerium oxide within eggshell membranes (ESMs) for the first time. Cerium from cerium oxide possesses unique ability to switch its oxidation state from cerium III to cerium IV and vice versa, which provides i… Show more

“…Following a bone defect, periostin plays important roles through all stages of bone regeneration, from the initial activation of stem cells in the periosteum, the active soft and hard callus phase, and the final phase of bone bridging ( Duchamp de Lageneste and Colnot, 2019 ). Previous studies used periostin as a biomarker to examine periosteum repair ( Duchamp de Lageneste et al, 2018 ; Wan et al, 2022 ). As shown in Figure 8C , periostin was stained as red fluorescence, the intensity of which was higher in the PCL/Ta and PCL/Ta/MgO groups.…”

“…For this test, cells were incubated with fetal bovine serum (free culture medium only) or different conditioned media for 24 h. The transwell cell migration assay was performed according to a previously reported protocol. [ 60 ] The bottom surfaces of the transwells were stained with crystal violet for 24 h to observe cell migration. Tube formation assays were performed according to manufacturer's instructions (Corning).…”

“…In this study, the most commonly used rat cranial critical defect model [6,33,34] was used to verify the bone-regenerative effect of the Yoda1 bilayer membrane. Cranial bone defects were covered with membranes.…”
