Smart grid controller for optimizing HVAC energy consumption

Abstract: As the smart grid emerges from concept to implementation, power utilities start to optimize power consumed by Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning Systems (HVACs). Engineers started to design controllers that better manage the power consumption of the HVAC systems. HVACs consume more than 50% of generated power in many countries that have hot and/or cold weather. Such huge power loads may exceed the generated power. Due to this large power demands, some utilities have to resort to rationalize the availabl… Show more

“…At present, there are a great number of publications related to the mathematical modelling of the temperature regimes of buildings which are residential, livestock, and industrial premises. In papers [8][9][10], various mathematical models of the temperature control systems inside residential buildings are considered. Insolation of buildings by solar radiation is considered in papers [14,15].…”

“…This allows estimation of the influence of each component on the dynamics of the system both separately and in combination, which simplifies the process of tuning under production conditions. In [9] it is suggested to use fuzzy logic controllers. The application of neural networks [10,11] is also considered, in which it is proposed to use model predictive control (MPC).…”

“…Following a polynomial controller synthesis approach and using a simulation environment for the analysis, Reference [ 9 ] proposed a temperature controller for a generic enclosed space based on robust control theory, analyzing the impact of the model parameter’s tolerances over the system stability analysis. On the other hand, in [ 10 ], the use of fuzzy logic controllers was proposed, and an optimization method for such architectures was presented. More advanced controllers have also been considered in the literature.…”
