Smartphones & microfluidics: Marriage for the future

Abstract: Smartphones have become widely recognized as a very interesting detection and controlling tool in microfluidics. They are portable devices with built-in cameras and internal microprocessors which carry out image processing. In this case, the external computers are not needed and phones can provide fast and accurate results. Moreover, the connectivity of smartphones gives the possibility to share and provide real-time results when needed, whether in health diagnostics, environmental monitoring, immunoassays or … Show more

“…Problems with lens quality can also play a role when a cheap camera is used for point-ofcare testing. Nevertheless, the use of digital cameras in personal diagnosis is considered as the next direction of research and application into praxis [70][71][72][73][74][75].…”

“…For example, some designs integrate microfluidics with PCBs (i.e., lab-on-PCB approaches), offering a new level of integration of sensors and electronics (108). Others suggest an integration with smartphones, which can offer accessible control and smart analytics (109). Hybrid optimization is further enhanced by new fabrication paradigms.…”

“…26 The combination of low cost, widespread availability, simple fabrication, and biodegradability inherent in these paper-based systems renders them suitable for point-of-care testing in resource-limited environments. [26][27][28] The intrinsic capillarity of the paper-based system allows it to operate without external pumps. This property facilitates the creation of analyte delivery systems without the need for any external energy sources.…”
