Social Capital and Local Development

Abstract: The concept of social capital has become more important in understanding contemporary economic development in the era of globalization. This concept, however, requires a theoretical framework that could help to distinguish between forms of social capital with positive effects on local development and other forms that may have negative consequences. This article argues that in order to understand this difference, two conditions are crucial. First, social capital has to be considered in terms of social relations… Show more

“…Social capital helps in shaping policy but another important dimension is that the policy also helps to generate social capital. Social capital is not just shapes of policy but the relation is in both ways, because in some countries where there is a weakness in state structures politics, it naturally obstructs the productive usage of social capital (Triglia 2001). So, having an adequate government policy in place is very important in order to benefit the most of the existing social capital in the community.…”

“…Both the theory of social capital and empirical studies in the field suggest that a right mix of different types of social capital -bonding, bridging and linking -is essential for pursuing local and regional development. In addition, it is important that the network of relations on a local level includes not only individuals but also organisations (Trigilia, 2001) and policies for local development are formulated and implemented through a close co-operation between public and private actors to be more effective.…”
