Social-ecological resilience through a biocultural lens: a participatory methodology to support global targets and local priorities

Abstract: More research is needed to properly represent social-ecological system (SES) interactions that support the integrity of biological and cultural, i.e., biocultural, relationships in places experiencing environmental, economic, and social change. In this paper we offer a novel methodology to address this need through the development of place-based indicators and engagement of young people as coresearchers in two communities that rely on resource extraction industries (specifically, oil and gas) in Canada and Sou… Show more

“…Two distinct methods are increasingly employed based on their abilities to cross the quantitative and qualitative divide: public participation GIS and Q-method (Craig et al 2002;Eden et al 2005). PPGIS is a powerful tool that incorporates community responses with key geospatial data to provide spatially-grounded policy recommendations and is best used as part of a suite of methods (Nijnik and Miller 2017;Maxwell 2018;Ungar et al 2020). Q-method is particularly appropriate in supporting PPGIS, because it is useful for revealing stakeholder perceptions and values of topics, which can result in policy appraisal, land-use management alternatives, critical reflection, and conflict resolution (Mukherjee et al 2018).…”

“…Sustainable development is one of the key issues of the contemporary restructuring of urban areas and the process of urban planning, which can play a vital role in implementing the solutions for the improvement of the environmental quality [7,8]. Ecological issues, including air quality, climate change, local microclimatic conditions or thermal comfort, as well as their perception by the users of the urban space, are gaining importance because they are increasingly perceived as a broader context of social problems (including political, cultural, and economic issues) [9][10][11][12][13][14][15]. In our opinion, in times of advanced modernisation and global factors of change, reflexivity, and the new awareness of ecological consequences and threats, also expressed in social awareness, mentality, and in the language of the various stakeholders, deserve special attention.…”
