Social influences on the duration of antibiotic treatment of clinical mastitis in dairy cows

Abstract: Clinical mastitis of dairy cows is a visible inflammation of the udder, which is usually caused by bacteria and treated with antibiotics. Although pressure is increasing to reduce antibiotic usage in livestock in the European Union, feedback from the field suggests that clinical mastitis treatment is frequently repeated after the initial per-label treatment, thereby extending treatment duration. The aim of this study was to explore the social factors influencing farmers' decision-making on the duration of anti… Show more

“…Interview topic guides and the online survey questionnaire were informed by a rapid literature review (Alarcon, 2013;BfR, 2015;Buller et al, 2015;Coyne et al, 2014;De Briyne et al, 2016;Dean et al, 2015;European Commission, 2005, 2010Fontané, 2015;Gibbons, 2013;Hughes, Hermans and Morgan, 2008;Jan et al, 2012;Laanen et al, 2014;Moreno, 2014;Schulze-Geisthövel et al, 2016;Speksnijder et al, 2014 andSwinkels, 2015;and Visschers et al, 2015).…”

“… Qualitative interviews have been a tool of choice for many social science studies of veterinarians and farmers, being used to document views and practices of antibiotics use, including comparative studies (e.g. Buller et al 2015;Coyne et al 2014;Moreno 2014;Speksnijder et al 2014;Swinkels 2015).…”

“…The current study sought to develop a questionnaire that predicts the factors influencing a consumer's intentions to indiscriminately obtain and use antibiotics. Given that attitudes and beliefs (32), the opinions of others within a person's social or professional network (33)(34)(35), and the selfperceived (and actual) ability to obtain antibiotics (36)(37)(38) have all been independently associated with the use of antibiotics, the current study aimed to construct a questionnaire informed by the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TpB) (39), a respected and highly cited model which predicts health related behaviours (40)(41)(42)(43). The TpB, which has yet to be used in the context of antibiotic use for consumers, would suggest that a person's actual use of antibiotics is best predicted by their intentions, which are influenced by three major components (see (44) was unable to be measured within this study protocol.…”

“…Despite the fact that antibiotic treatment is still extensively employed in the control of bovine mastitis, the use of the correct antibiotic and duration of treatment are essential to ensure a successful therapy (Hillerton and Kliem, 2002; Swinkels et al, 2015). Furthermore, antibiotic resistance in pathogens remains a great concern, making regular screenings of antibiotic resistance patterns an indispensable procedure (Erskine et al, 2002).…”
