Social Innovation in Brazil Through Design Strategy

Abstract: T he world is filled with pressing social challenges that cry out for solution. On one side are issues related to natural resources, such as global climate change and adequate food supplies. On the other are problems with service systems, exemplified by issues with the cost and quality of healthcare as well as difficulties with transportation and improvements in education. “…Social innovation involves "new ideas (products, services and models) that simultaneously meet social needs and create new social relationships or collaborations" (Murray et al, 2010, p. 3). Design for social innovation creates innovations that improve life in society and introduce more sustainable solutions and business models (Cipolla and Moura, 2011). One example is the DESIS (for Design for Social Innovation and Sustainability) Network (http://www.desis-network.org), which has applied its design for social innovation approach to BoP contexts.…”

“…In this way, social innovations can be understood as processes of change that were motivated by novel strategies to combine actors and elements from their contexts, in order to satisfy their unmet social needs (Mulgan, 2007;Manzini, 2014). Some of the designers who have worked under this perspective are Cipolla and Moura (2012), Seravalli (2013) and Manzini (2014).…”
