“…For those respondents who agree on the existence of non-heterosexual Sikhs, they would have surely seen or heard of them on social networking sites as social media is filled with abundance of news and information of non-heterosexual people. This is in line with the research on social media and lesbians in Malaysia by Juaini et al (2017), in which it was reported that visitors and followers on social media targeting Malaysian lesbians increased threefold. Multiple websites targeting Malaysian lesbians have been discovered with 240,102 users overall.…”

“…This explains that Sikh youths know that LGBT people face certain challenges and that their needs or rights are not given due attention. This finding is true across the various studies on homosexuality in Malaysia (Felix, 2016; Gany, 2016; Jerome, 2013; Juaini et al, 2017; Muhammed & Amuda, 2018; Owoyemi & Sabri, 2014), wherein all the researchers state that Malaysians generally find it rather difficult to accept the LGBT community and their lifestyle, as it is directly against the official religion, Islam. Though the younger generation is more aware of the concept and of the struggles of the LGBT community, thanks to social media and rapid technological growth, one cannot overlook the reality that religion plays a very important role in defining one’s identity and ideologies.…”

“…Typically, lesbian participation on this platform is to avoid anti-LGBTQ sentiment in the family and can connect with members of the lesbian community (Higa et al, 2014). The number of individual participants in this community on Facebook is constantly increasing and various communities related to the lesbian population have been formed on the platform (Juaini et al, 2017). It clearly shows that the support of the lesbian community strongly influences the involvement of individuals in same-sex activity.…”

“…The issue of lesbians is already known to the community, but the increase in this population is difficult to describe because there are no statistics as a reference to clarify how serious the issue is. At a glance, this study has revealed a drastic increase in the number of lesbians who actively use social media (Juaini et al, 2017) and serve as a free space for lesbians to communicate with each other because the social environment in Malaysia does not allow for the open disclosure of lesbian identity. However, this situation cannot be taken lightly as social ostracization against this group will increase risky behavior, including depression, alcohol addiction, HIV/AIDS infections, family neglect, and abuse.…”
