Social Perception of Riparian Forests

Abstract: Riparian forests are ecotones that differ from the surrounding landscapes, delineating the transition from terrestrial ecosystems into aquatic ones. Riparian forest management has been recognized as a possible method for promoting several ecological functions. In order to develop a sustainable and resilient relationship between river riparian forests and society, it is necessary to analyze the sociocultural dimension of riparian zones. The aim of this study was to assess the social perceptions of riparian fore… Show more

“…The riparian zone is an essential ecological transition from rural to urban environment and from river water to terrestrial ecosystem. This ecological zone provides a beneficial relationship between the urban people and the environment that cannot be replaced by structural technologies, and it has various functions in terms of environmental services, social, economic [92], and cultural aspects [93].…”

“…The roots of riparian plants help to stabilize streambanks and reduce erosion, while the leaves and branches of these plants shade the water and help to keep it cool [3]. Socially, riparian vegetation plays a vital role in providing recreational opportunities, such as fishing and hiking [4], and can also have economic benefits, such as providing timber and other resources [5]. However, these ecosystems are facing many threats, including urbanization, agriculture, mining, and water withdrawals.…”

“…In places that are used as beaches for reasons of good access to the water (with low or moderate bank slopes), it is necessary to focus on supporting the recreational function of the riparian stands. Several authors dealt with the issue of the recreational function of riparian vegetation in various contexts (Valtýni 1981, Rasmussen, Padget 1994, Collective of authors 2002, Majorošová, Reháčková 2022, Saklaurs et al 2022, Zingraff-Hamed et al 2022. In places with a steep bank slopes with significant abrasion and poor access to water, the anti-erosion (anti-abrasion) function of the riparian stands should be a priority.…”
