Social Risk-Management Strategies in Pastoral Systems: A Qualitative Comparative Analysis

Abstract: Pastoralists risk losing their livelihood overnight due to drought, disease, and other disasters. They employ different strategies to minimize these risks, including the following: Mobility, herd maximization, diversification, and social strategies. Social strategies are considered critical because they provide not only a safety net during disasters but also contribute to the resilience of pastoral societies by allowing pastoralists to rebuild herds after disasters. There is, however, much variation in social … Show more

“…Studies that fall into this category focus on identifying sufficient conditions that explain a specific management phenomenon. Commonly, these studies confirm (Kalleberg & Vaisey, 2005), complement (Vis et al, 2007) or provide more nuances to the existing knowledge (e.g., Moritz et al, 2011;Ordanini & Maglio, 2009). Other studies seek to confirm existing knowledge (Schneider et al, 2010).…”

“…Many work for wages or otherwise supplement their pastoral incomes. Their multipronged efforts reveal livelihoods not limited to pastoralism; they practice what anthropologists of nomadism describe as "multi-resource nomadism" based on "risk minimization" (Dyson-Hudson 1972;Salzman 1972;Moritz et al 2011). Movement between pastures following rainfall is a common pattern of pastoral nomadism within much of the study area, as is dependence on browse from perennial tree resources.…”
