Landslides represent one of the world’s most dangerous and widespread risks, annually causing thousands of deaths and billions of dollars worth of damage. Building on and around hilly areas in many regions has increased, and it poses a severe threat to the physical infrastructure and people living within such zones. Quantitative assessment of social vulnerability in Malaysia is worrying because it has been given less attention than hazard-related studies. Therefore, this study’s objective is to find out the indicators used for social vulnerability assessment in the context of a landslide in Malaysia. The analysis is critical for understanding the measures of social vulnerability, given that the incorporation of climate change and disaster risk mitigation issues in urban planning and management are considered priorities in ensuring a stable population growth and avoiding economic disruption. A systematic study on the Scopus and Web of Science repositories was conducted based on the PRISMA Report analysis method. This article concluded that there are six important indicators of social vulnerability in the context of landslide in Malaysia.

This research aims to explore the spatial pattern of vulnerability and resilience to natural hazards in northeastern Taiwan. We apply the spatially explicit resilience-vulnerability model (SERV) to quantify the vulnerability and resilience to natural hazards, including flood and debris flow events, which are the most common natural hazards in our case study area due to the topography and precipitation features. In order to provide a concise result, we apply the principal component analysis (PCA) to aggregate the correlated variables. Moreover, we use the spatial autocorrelation analysis to analyze the spatial pattern and spatial difference. We also adopt the geographically weighted regression (GWR) to validate the effectiveness of SERV. The result of GWR shows that SERV is valid and unbiased. Moreover, the result of spatial autocorrelation analysis shows that the mountain areas are extremely vulnerable and lack enough resilience. In contrast, the urban regions in plain areas show low vulnerability and high resilience. The spatial difference between the mountain and plain areas is significant. The topography is the most significant factor for the spatial difference. The high elevation and steep slopes in mountain areas are significant obstacles for socioeconomic development. This situation causes consequences of high vulnerability and low resilience. The other regions, the urban regions in the plain areas, have favorable topography for socioeconomic development. Eventually, it forms a scenario of low vulnerability and high resilience.

The Kutupalong-Balukhali expansion Rohingya camp provides shelter to nearly one million refugees in a landslide-prone area. The Rohingyas seeking refuge in the camps deal with annual landslide events. This study looks into the existing risk perception of landslides in this shelter-seeking refugee community. Using a structured questionnaire, we conducted a face-to-face survey of 400 Rohingya people from six selected camps in March 2022. We collected information about refugees’ perceptions towards landslide disasters, exposure to hazardous events, mitigation measures, preparedness knowledge, and risk communication. Descriptive statistical analysis was carried out to find out the existing condition of the camps. A regression analysis (Proportional Odds Model) was applied to determine the perception of people at risk. We found that exposure to previous landslides, mitigation measure quality, and emergency managers’ roles were crucial in defining people’s risk perception compared to the demographic characteristics of the Rohingya population. A combination of integrated mitigation, preparedness, and inclusion of laypeople in the overall management process would reduce landslide disaster risk inside the camps.
