“…The present study findings revealed that obesity was significantly lower among males (9.4%) than females (19.3%), which was consistent with those of other studies on obesity (6,18,21,(24)(25)(26). “…In Bushehr, the prevalence of obesity and overweight was assessed in males and females above 64 years old and the results showed that 57.7% and 14.7% of males were overweight and obese, respectively. As for the females, these variables were 73.2% and 33.7%, respectively, which showed a gender tendency toward overweight and obesity in the studied population (21) (22). A study from Hormozgan province, on subjects aged 18 -64 years, showed that the prevalence of obesity was 12%, which was 7% in males and 14.7% in females (23).…”

“…Conversely, a recent study conducted by Ratnaprabha et al in Bangalore, India documented that literate subjects had 5•3 times higher risk of becoming OW/OB possibly due to better social conditions and better access to food (12) . Several studies conducted in Brazil, Iran and Spain have reported increasing income as an important risk factor for OW/OB among geriatric subjects, as observed in the present study (32)(33)(34)(35) , whereas geriatric subjects having less than Rs 1000/month per capita income has been associated with 2•5 times higher chances of becoming UW in an earlier study conducted by Kalaiselvi et al in Puducherry (7) . This suggests that educational status and economic status may have an important effect on the weight status of geriatric subjects.…”

“…Although the current studies assessed the effect of different socioeconomic factors on overweight and obesity in Iran, there are limited numbers of studies [25,26] aimed to quantify socioeconomic inequalities in overweight and obesity in certain provinces of Iran. Accordingly, the main aim of the present study was to measure socioeconomic inequalities in overweight and obesity and then to identify the major contributors to the measured inequality in the outcome variables.…”
