Can conventional rituals be meaningful? When and how can conventionality be part of processes of meaning-making rather than a mere obstacle that the cultural analyst must overcome? The article traces the meanings of minor rituals that populate the world of modern industrial societies and seem to have universal appeal. The article applies a Blochian regressive method to ethnological history in order to re-create the gradual process in which conventions appear, are disseminated, popularized, turned into group icons, and ritualized, and only then—and only sometimes—acquire discursive meanings that are often contested. This sequential model reveals the power of conventionality—the lack of contemplation about social conventions—in the processes of popularizing, ritualizing, and iconizing conventional acts. In the terms of Alexander’s meaning-centered performance theory, this conventionality exemplifies a “perfect” or “effortless” fusion of performers and audience. The article thus argues that the meanings of conventional rituals—and perhaps also of conventional performances of more “sacred” rituals—often lie not in symbolic significance or semiotic thickness, but in deep conventionality: meaningfulness encoded in the convention itself.

This article charts the development of the sociology of culture in France. First, it examines the hypothesis of a French model, putting into perspective the correlation between cultural policies and dedicated sociological inquiries at the end of the 1950s. 'Culture' is one of the oldest fields of research in France, and current research still derives from the same anthropological matrix. Yet French sociologists present themselves as part of a divided and competitive academic domain. This article, based on an encompassing review of the literature as well as on in-depth interviews, accordingly distinguishes eight different 'schools'-organized around pre-eminent academics, concept producers and resource providers-as well as circles of collaboration. Whilst these circles organize their theoretical activity around emblems (with the word 'culture' referring to different conceptual sets) the social relations in their midst are organized around dyads, which usually transition from positive collaboration to rivalry. The article highlights the importance of these divisions as a fractal process and as boundary work for scientific production. From this perspective, the sociology of culture in France could be described as a large and extensive system of concepts and collaborations developed within small groups, within and between which, as with all 'cultural' matters, symbolic activity is the key basis for social status.

Pierre Bourdieu sine analysar av klasse-, kultur-og smaksforskjellar i Distinksjonen (1984 [1979]) bygde på undersøkingar frå Frankrike på 1960-og 70-talet. Analysane er breitt sitert og kritisert, men spørsmålet som stadig vert reist er: kor fruktbart er det å nytta Bourdieu sine analytiske omgrep og metodiske strategiar frå Distinksjonen i studiar i dag, om lag 50 år seinare, og i andre kontekstar enn den franske?Både internasjonalt (sjå t. (nr. 4, 2007, nr. 2, 2008, nr. 3, 2008 og nr. 2, 2012). Debatten vart sett i gong av Ove Skarpenes sin artikkel «Den 'legitime' kulturens moralske forankring» (2007), i dag omtala som Skarpenes-debatten. I det norske sosiologiske miljøet er det tillaup til polarisering mellom det Håkon Larsen omtalar som «den nye kultursosiologien» (2013); med fransk ny-pragmatisme, repertoarteori og «det sterke programmet» som «utfordrarar» til meir eller mindre tradisjonell Bourdieu-inspirert kultursosiologi, og desse sine støttespelarar og avleggjarar i norsk sosiologi. I det seinare har det òg vore ei meiningsutveksling om kor vidt Larsen sitt forsøk på ny skuledanning innan kultursosiologien er slagkraftig eller ei (Mangset 2016;Larsen 2016). I så vel Distinksjonen som i diskusjonen om Distinksjonen i Noreg er spørsmålet om kulturell legitimitet sentralt. Kva kulturformer og estetiske uttrykk haustar anerkjenning, og med kva rettmessigheit? Kva har kulturell legitimitet i Noreg, og ikkje minst, korleis gå fram for å få svar på spørsmålet?Artikkelen er ein kommentar til debatten om kulturell legitimitet i Noreg. Eg skal diskutera brukbarheita i Bourdieu sine analytiske omgrep og metodiske strategiar frå Distinksjonen, via plass til kritikk reist mot desse, samt presentera ny empiri om ulike sosiale grup-
