Sodium 18F-Fluoride PET/CT of Bone, Joint, and Other Disorders

Abstract: The use of 18F-sodium fluoride (18F-NaF) with positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET/CT) is increasing. This resurgence of an old tracer has been fueled by several factors including superior diagnostic performance over standard 99mTc-based bone scintigraphy, growth in the availability of PET/CT imaging systems, increase in the number of regional commercial distribution centers for PET radiotracers, the recent concerns about potential chronic shortages with 99mTc based radiotracers, and the recen… Show more

“…In addition, 18 F-fluoride uptake is 2-fold higher than 99m Tc-MDP, leading to improved lesion detectability (29,30). Furthermore, although fluoride PET/CT has a higher cost, acquisition time is faster and spatial resolution higher, and images may be acquired earlier (31)(32)(33). All these factors lead to a better performance of fluoride PET/CT to detect bone lesions and to define equivocal bone metastases (18,34,35).…”

“…Figure 4 shows the representative PET/CT images. Since the 18 F ion that is attributable to metabolism of 18 F-FDG in vivo accumulates in bone, [22] the vertebrae were clearly visualized inall mice (Figure4, circles). On day 5, prominent radioactivity accumulated in the laparotomy wound, and it was difficult to compare the radioactivity accumulated in the liver in the two groups.…”
