Sodium Hyaluronate in the Treatment of Dry Eye Syndrome: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract: This systematic review and meta-analysis compares sodium hyaluronate (HY) with non-HY based artificial tears in the treatment of dry eye syndrome. A literature search for clinical trials comparing HY against non-HY preparations was conducted across PubMed, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and Scopus databases from inception up to May 2016. Majority of the 18 studies selected for review showed superiority of HY in improving ocular staining and symptoms. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) examinin… Show more

“…We also reviewed the latest published meta-analysis that focused on DED therapy. In summary, in comparison to AT or placebo, 0.05% cyclosporine group and omega-3 group had lower OSDI (MD = 4.10 and MD = 0.968), but carboxymethylcellulose group and sodium hyaluronate group had no statistical significance [20][21][22][23]. In consideration of the fact that AS group had significant lower OSDI (MD = 10.75) than AT group, AS might had powerful effectiveness in comforting DED patients.…”

“…The anti-inflammatory characteristics that have been attributed to GAGs and PGs, such as high molecular weight HA (HMWHA), makes them even more attractive candidates for use in treating dry eye. The number of studies using HA, chemically modified HA and HA analogs has increased exponentially over the past few years ( Salwowska et al, 2016 ; Ang et al, 2017 ; Pinto-Fraga et al, 2017 ). Lubricin is also emerging as a powerful agent in treating dry eye ( Lambiase et al, 2017 ; Regmi et al, 2017 ).…”

“…HA is one of the main components of the extracellular matrix (ECM), and as such, is highly abundant in the ECM-rich tissues such as synovial fluid, vitreous body of eyes or dermis 16 , 17 . With a highly hydrophilic structure, HA plays important roles for water retention in skin and eyes 18 , 19 . In addition, the molecular weight of native HA being large (>1000KDa), the prepared solutions are generally very viscous with a shear-thinning character 20 .…”
