Soft impacts on aerospace structures

Abstract: This article provides an overview of the literature dealing with three types of soft impacts of concern for the aerospace applications, namely impacts of rain drops, hailstones and birds against aircraft. It describes the physics of the problem as it has become better understood through experiments, analyses, and numerical simulations. Some emphasis has been placed on the material models and the numerical approaches used in modeling these three types of projectiles.

“…Aircraft engines are the critical front-facing components, and the fan blades may be subjected to bird strike with high probability (Abrate, 2016). Capability of ingesting birds weighing up to 1.8 kg without sustaining damage is required so that no fatal threat will pose to the people in aircraft.…”

“…Liquid impacts on solids involve physical problems of high engineering interest, as they are linked with erosion development [1] and eventual damage of mechanical structures and machines; therefore, they are of interest to a wide range of hydraulic machinery utilised in many industrial applications. Cavita- 5 tion formation and induced erosion can be also realised during the impact of liquid droplets on steam-turbine blades [2], and rain droplets impacting on airplanes [3] and wind-turbine blades [4]. Moreover, shock-wave interaction with material interfaces has been extensively demonstrated in e.g.…”

“…In doing so, the focus was on the accuracy of describing the process of damage by a bird. Lagrangian, Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) and Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) formulations have found wide application [1,3,[6][7][8][9][10].…”
