Soft x-ray imager (SXI) onboard ASTRO-H

Abstract: We are designing an X-ray CCD camera (SXI) for ASTRO-H, including many new items. We have developed the CCD, CCD-NeXT4, that is a P-channel type CCD. It has a thick depletion layer of 200μm with an imaging area of 30 mm square. Since it is back-illuminated, it has a good low energy response and is robust against the impact of micro-meteorites. We will employ 4 chips to cover the area of 60 mm square. A mechanical rather than peltier cooler will be employed so that we can cool the CCD to -120 • C. We will also … Show more

“…After the EOB extension, we started commissioning the filter wheel electronics (FWE), which was the last SXS subsystem to be powered. The filter wheel was rotated on day 30 in order to provide X-ray illumination of the whole array by 55 Fe sources. The resulting calibration data set was used to refine the gain scales and measure the energy resolutions of the individual pixels.…”

“…The soft X-ray imaging system is consisted of an imaging mirror, the Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT-I), and a CCD camera, the Soft X-ray Imager (SXI), as well as the cooling system. [52][53][54][55][56][57] Fig. 7 (left) shows a photograph of the SXI detector.…”

“…The first term represents the effective output signal S(z) of ADC while the second one is the residual quantization noise. According to (2), in the time domain, s(n) is the convolution of v in (n) and the filter's impulse response h(n). Given the modulator's inputs during the post phase are always 0, the filter's decimation output of every conversion becomes…”

“…Therefore, X-ray CCDs have a good reputation in modern astronomical observation and high-energy particle detection due to their excellent spatial resolution and sufficient energy resolution [1]. They have been successfully utilized in recent astronomical satellites such as the missions of ASTRO-H from Japan [2], CLASS from India [3], and HXMT from China [4].…”

“…The Soft X-ray Imager (SXI) [3][4][5][6][7][8][9] is an imaging spectrometer aboard Hitomi covering the energy range between 0.4 and 12 keV. X-rays are focused by the Wolter type I mirror optics, the Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT-I), 10 with a focal length of 5.6 m. An array of x-ray charge-coupled devices (CCDs) covers a large field of view (FoV) of 38 0 × 38 0 .…”
