Software-Defined Networking: A Comprehensive Survey

Abstract: The Internet has led to the creation of a digital society, where (almost) everything is connected and is accessible from anywhere. However, despite their widespread adoption, traditional IP networks are complex and very hard to manage. It is both difficult to configure the network according to predefined policies, and to reconfigure it to respond to faults, load and changes. To make matters even more difficult, current networks are also vertically integrated: the control and data planes are bundled together. S… Show more

“…Many existing studies highlight security and other issues with SDN. To address these issues, a distributed architecture (which contains multiple SDN controllers connected to each other) is introduced [3], [4]. Several existing studies focus on the problem of state consistency among numerous controllers.…”

“…In addition to these problems, a distributed SDN network is required, which possess properties like high availability and low response time. Although there are multiple studies in the literature offering a reliable and scalable solution to the distributed network for management [1], [3], [5], however, none of these studies have solved this problem completely.…”

“…SDN makes the network more reliable by centralizing it through separating the control plane from the data plane. However, the emerging paradigm is subjected to many security vulnerabilities and new faults that can be used by attackers to create different types of malicious attacks [1], [2]. Further, the common threats and attacks which can exploit the classical network infrastructure can also exist in the SDN environment [3].…”

“…In the scope of network architectures, Software Defined Networks, (SDN) [5] is a paradigm used to increase network performance in high-throughput scenarios. This paradigm uses a component named controller that is aware of the use of the entire network as well of the resources to be managed.…”
