Although not widely used, ecosystem engineers represent a promising and sustainable tool in nature-based ecosystem management and restoration. In grassland ecosystems, a few invertebrates that engineer soils have been identified as key species regulating soil nutrients and plant communities' diversity and dynamics. Here, we assessed the role of the harvester ant Messor barbarus, an ecological engineer, in a Mediterranean dry grassland under restoration by characterising its nest environment, particularly the soil and vegetation. We found profound differences in soil physical and chemical variables and plant community structure between nests and antfree patches in the restored grassland. Messor barbarus has improved soil fertility, driven the seed bank towards the reference grassland and significantly increased plant biomass, species richness and micro-local-heterogeneity. As biological filters, M. barbarus has driven plant communities towards a new trajectory in the restored site. Ant patches are characterised by mesotrophic species, whereas ant-free patches are dominated by species characteristic of compacted soils. They have accelerated the ecological recovery of Mediterranean dry grassland plants by directly and indirectly facilitating their re-establishment. These results illustrate the potential key role of ants as ecological engineers for the conservation and restoration of Mediterranean grasslands.

The 4th edition of the International Code of Phytosociological Nomenclature (ICPN) was prepared by the Steering Committee of the IAVS Working Group for Phytosociological Nomenclature (GPN). The edition consists of 14 Definitions, 7 Principles, 53 Articles, and 7 Appendices. When compared with the previous edition, the main amendments are (1) the acceptance of electronic publications (Art. 1), (2) the introduction of binding decisions (Definition XIV, Principle II, Articles 1, 2b, 3c, 29b, 40, 42, 44, Appendices VI and VII), (3) the mandatory use of the English or the Latin terminology for syntaxonomic novelties (Definition II, Principle II, Articles 3d and 3i), (4) the introduction of autonyms for the main ranks when the corresponding secondary ranks are created (Articles 13b and 24), (5) the automatic correction of the taxon names (name-giving taxa) used in the names of syntaxa in accordance with the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (ICN) (Article 44), (6) the possibility to mutate the name of a syntaxon in using another correct, alternative name for the name-giving taxa (Article 45), (7) the Accepted Article This article is protected by copyright. In the course of the project "Syntaxonomic checklist of the Italian classes, orders and alliances (Vegetation Prodrome of Italy)", promoted in 2012 by the Italian "Ministry of Environment, Land and Sea Protection" in collaboration with the "Italian Society of Botany", it arises that some syntaxa are not validly published according to the International Code of Phytosociological Nomenclature rules. For this reason, these syntaxa names are validated in this paper. Furthermore, other new syntaxa of different hierarchical levels are here described for the first time. Therefore, one new order, two new suborders, six new alliances, two new suballiances and three new associations are here described. These new syntaxa belong to the following classes: Juncetea maritimi, Stellarietea mediae, Trifolio medii -Geranietea sanguinei, Alnetea glutinosae and Salici purpureae -Populetea nigrae. Finally, the syntaxonomic arrangement of Alnion incanae is here discussed.
