Soil organic carbon of grassland and bush forest on dryland in Aceh Besar District, Indonesia

Abstract: Abstract. Abdullah UH, Sufardi S, Syafruddin S, Arabia T. 2022. Soil organic carbon of grassland and bush forest on dryland in Aceh Besar District, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 2594-2600. Soil organic carbon (SOC) is one of the important components that can improve soil conditions and maintain agriculture sustainability. This study was conducted to determine the potential of soil organic carbon in grassland and bush forest in Aceh Besar District. We used purposive random sampling by taking soil samples at vari… Show more

“…In this study, forests were characterized by the presence of woody plants absent in either paddy fields or savanna. According to Abdullah et al (2022), the presence of woody plants in dryland ecosystems will increase plant density and carbon stocks. At the global level (Table 2), the GHG values obtained here are comparable and follow common patterns that CO2 has always exceeded CH4 and NO2.…”

“…This observation could be attributed to the rich distribution of plant aboveground litter and underground roots in the upper soil layer (0-20 cm). The decomposition of plant aboveground litter and belowground roots enriches the humus in the topsoil with a distinct surface aggregation (Gao et al 2014;Abdullah et al 2022). In addition, an abundance of plant litter and roots, high humidity, plentiful microorganisms, and the continuous disturbance in the topsoil promote the accumulation of soil nutrients (Deng et al 2015).…”

“…Dry land management efforts in Aceh Besar district also serve to preserve the environment and keep the carbon cycle in good condition. Therefore, it is necessary to maintain the availability of soil carbon stocks for sustainable land management, including in the agricultural aspect (Abdullah, Sufardi, et al, 2022).…”
