Solar‐powered BDD‐electrolysis remediation of soil washing fluid spiked with diesel

Abstract: BACKGROUND The remediation of a soil spiked with diesel using Unitol L90 and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in a soil washing process was evaluated. The washing process was followed by an anodic oxidation based on boron doped‐diamond electrolysis (BDD‐electrolysis) to treat the washing liquid, using a solar photovoltaic (PV)‐battery system as a direct electrical power source. RESULTS The results demonstrate that high concentrations of Unitol L 90 and SDS are required for the surfactant‐aided soil‐washing (SASW) … Show more

“…A maximum power point tracker (Victron Blue solar 150/45-MC-4) was connected in between PV modules and the two 12 V batteries (Solar Freedom, 12 V/240 Ah each) to guarantee that the maximum electric energy available was always extracted from the solar cells. The power supply to regulate the current applied to the electrochemical treatment reactor, and the potentiostat/galvanostat used for the electrochemical device, were directly connected to the batteries, as described in a previous work [ 39 , 40 ].…”

“…Therefore, more studies are in progress in order to decrease EC and consequently, the relative costs. Another strategy is based on the integration of photovoltaic (PV) to electrochemical technologies to supply the electrical energy for treating different water matrices [47][48][49]. The falling price and the more efficient materials used in solar photovoltaic panels are making the process promising.…”

“…Furthermore, energy storage systems have been used to smooth the power produced by renewable energies. This powering strategy accommodates energy production and demand, even though energy conversion loses may arise, reducing the specific remediation efficiency (de Melo Henrique et al, 2019;Ganiyu et al, 2019;Iyappan et al, 2014). In view of this fact, the most pragmatic and efficient coupling of PV plants and electro-oxidation treatments seems to be the random direct connection between both systems.…”
