Solid-pseudopapillary tumor of the pancreatic tail

Abstract: Abstract Abstract AbstractWe report a case of the rare solid-pseudopapillary tumor of the pancreas. In contrast to other pancreatic tumors, the solid-pseudopapillary tumor has a favorable prognosis. The 60-year-old female patient we report on here was treated by left pancreatic resection combined with splenectomy for a non-metastasizing tumor of the pancreas. A solid-pseudopapillary tumor was found on histology. The patient had no signs of metastases at present. Since a microscopically invasive tumor growth is… Show more

“…Physical examination is often normal apart from the presence of an upper abdominal mass. When a palpable mass is presented, the average size of the tumor becomes quite remarkable reaching 8 to 10 cm in diameter, something seen in the reported patients in our manuscript (28,29). SPTs have not been associated with specific clinical laboratory test findings, including tumor markers (30,31).…”

“…The majority of metastatic patients are male. The correlation between tumor size and malignant potential is controversial (29,30) and the blood vessels' invasion, high degree of nuclear atypia, high mitotic count and presence of large necrotic clusters are considered criteria of high malignancy potential. Nishihara et al demonstrated aneuploidy in patients with metastases, whereas patients without any sign of malignancy showed diploidy (9).…”

“…It is also well-defined, well circumscribed and well-demarcated (2,(4)(5)(6)(7)(8)(9). Characteristic solid and cystic portions are present in the lumen of the tumor and they can be observed on radiological examinations, such as USG, CT and MRI (2)(3)(4)(5)(6)(7)(8). Their mutual proportions can be various and the tumor can be differentiated from entirely solid to completely cystic (4,6,7).…”
