Solid Residues from the Distillation of Salvia lavandulifolia Vahl as a Natural Source of Antioxidant Compounds

Abstract: The phenolic composition and in vitro antioxidant properties of solid residues from the distillation of eight populations of Salvia lavandulifolia were investigated to select the most suitable plant materials to yield natural antioxidants. The residues showed a very different phenolic content and composition, populations SL1, SL5, SL7, and SL8 showed a good total phenolic content, and comparable results in the assays of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and Ferric-Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP), and in t… Show more

“…Salvigenin (10.5 mg/100 g seed oil) was the most-abundant polyphenolic component identified and quantified in this oil, followed by carnosol, apigenin, cirsimaritin, and eupatorin. Salvigenin is a member of the class of compounds known as 7-o-methylated flavonoids and has also been described as the major polyphenolic compound quantified in Spanish sage leaves [35].…”

“…As a result of this activity, a significant volume of by-products from the distillation process is produced every season. Distilled sage by-product is an important source of polyphenols with a high antioxidant power [ 9 ].…”
