Solidago ×snarskisii nothosp. nov. (Asteraceae) from Lithuania and its position in the infrageneric classification of the genus

Abstract: A natural hybrid between the native Solidago virgaurea and the alien invasive S. gigantea, recorded in South Lithuania, is described as S. ×snarskisii nothosp. nov. A new nothosubsection, Solidago sect. Solidago nothosubsect. Triplidago nothosubsect. nov., is proposed to accommodate this hybrid and S. ×niederederi.

“…The area of the garden was also under a manual weed removal system to eliminate the competition with other species and to increase the chance of hybrid seedling recruitment. The viability of hybrid seedlings (leaf rosettes) was estimated visually based on leaf morphology features (Nilsson 1976;Gudžinskas and Ž alneravičius 2016).…”

“…We excluded from the consideration young vegetative plants, which are difficult to recognize in the field, defining the hybrid individual as a visually separated cluster of mature ramets (generative/sexual and vegetative/asexual stems). The hybrid was identified using morphological features provided by Nilsson (1976) and Gudžinskas and Ž alneravičius (2016).…”

“…The grid cells were arranged according to geographical co-ordinates with sides 6' latitude and 10' longitude. The area of grid cells varies from 116.5 km 2 in the northern to 123.2 km 2 in the southern part of Lithuania (Gudžinskas, 1993). All localities recorded in the same grid cell on the map were marked by a single symbol.…”

“…A. artemisiifolia was first found in Lithuania in 1884, in Latvia in 1936 and in Estonia in 1954 (Tabaka et al, 1988;Gudžinskas, 1993;Saar et al, 2000). A. artemisiifolia is mostly recorded along railways and close to major cities (Herbarium of Institute of Biology of the University of Latvia) (Bullock et al, 2010;Šaulienė and Veriankaitė, 2012).…”
