Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are traditionallys ynthesized solvothermally by using cost-and waste-incurring organic solvents. Here, ad irect synthesis methodi sr eported for ZIF-8, ZIF-67, and their heterometallic versionsf rom solid precursors only. This solvent-freec rystallization methodn ot only completely avoids organic solvents, but also provides an effectivep ath for the synthesis of homogeneous mixed-metal ZIFs. Furthermore, under templating by NaCl/ZnCl 2 eutectic salt, carbonizationo ft he ZIF materialsg ives rise to as eries of N-containing high-surface-area carbonm aterials with impressive catalytic properties for the oxygen reduction reaction.Supporting information and the ORCID identification number(s) for the author(s) of this article can be found under: https://doi.
