Solving the area coverage problem with UAVs: A vehicle routing with time windows variation

Abstract: In real life, providing security for a set of large areas by covering the area with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) is a difficult problem that consist of multiple objectives. These difficulties are even greater if the area coverage must continue throughout a specific time window. We address this by considering a Vehicle Routing Problem with Time Windows (VRPTW) variation in which capacity of agents is one and each customer (target area) must be supplied with more than one vehicles simultaneously without viola… Show more

“…It is a new direction in developing and creating fire protection systems based on the application of portable aerial vehicles that perform the ignition source search and detection with the required degree of accuracy. Simultaneously, algorithms for the movement control of the MGA to the ignition source start to play a crucial role in such systems (Semiz and Polat, 2020;Babel, 2014).…”

“…The problem is formulated as a generalization of the team orienteering problem studied in the vehicle routing literature. Evers et al [16] studied the UAV reconnaissance mission planning problem with time windows and timesensitive targets, which is modeled as the maximum coverage stochastic orienteering problem with time windows. They first construct a tour with maximum expected profits of targets and then develop a fast heuristic to re-plan the tour in the event a time-sensitive target appears.…”
