Solving the hidden and exposed terminal problems using directional-antenna based MAC protocol for wireless sensor networks

Abstract: A critical design issue for wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is the development of medium access control (MAC) protocols that efficiently reduce power consumption. WSNs sensor nodes are generally powered by batteries which provide a limited amount of energy, and it is often difficult to recharge or replace batteries. Therefore power aware and energy efficient MAC protocols at each layer of the communications are very essential for wireless sensor networks (11). Fairness to both the usage of a channel and messag… Show more

“…There are other existing works that try to improve spatial reuse by changing parameters other than the CST such as transmit power [19] and modulation and coding scheme (MCS) [20]. Also, some works use special hardware such as directional antenna [21] or full-duplex capability [22] to improve system spectral efficiency of the system.…”

“…In order to improve efficiency in energy consumption, the use of directional antennas has been proposed for wireless sensor networks [ 10 ]. Directional antennas provide several advantages such as spatial reuse channel and increases in coverage distance.…”

“…However, directional antennas present a new problem called the directional hidden node problem, which is quite similar to the problem found in VLC networks. Solutions to the the directional hidden node problem in wireless sensor networks have been proposed, see [ 10 ], based on the rotation of the directional antenna. The rotation of the antenna is combined with some type of scheduling scheme in order to receive the transmissions coming from surrounding nodes.…”
